Aim
The aim is to establish basic understanding regarding additive manufacturing (AM) as the industrial method for prototyping and manufacture of advanced parts. The course provides an overview of techniques for metal, polymer/composite and ceramic with their limitations and possibilities. International definitions are introduced and terminology is explained. The course covers pre-processing, components design for AM, process know-how, materials selection and basic aspects of manufacturing of metallic and polymeric products with respect to materials and processing technologies. Certain aspects of additive manufacturing of ceramics are also covered.

Course literature and software
Lecture slides (pdf and videos) are published on Canvas course web and define the course contents. Reference course book is: Additive Manufacturing Technologies by Ian Gibson, http://proxy.lib.chalmers.se/login?url=https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4939-2113-3. The book by Gibson can be bought as paper-back at reasonable cost at Chalmers or from different sources. You can follow the course based on Canvas published course documents only.
Problem solving examples are defined separately and not necessarily taken from reference course book. The software programmes for AM pre-processing Simplify 3D (for polymer printing) are installed at Chalmers for project work and access will be provided to all participants.
Course design
The course is organised via distance learning on half speed. Lectures are provided via on-line interactive lectures via Zoom/Microsoft Teams. An introduction to software for pre-processing of additive manufacturing like Simplify 3D is included. The software will be reachable for the project work by external connection. The course consists of number lectures presenting various new areas. A project assignment in a group of up to 5 participants is carried out with focus on selection, design and additive manufacturing of components. The project assignment includes critical evaluation of the technologies and available materials with focus on suitability of the selected method. Communication, organising of course and access will be monitored via Canvas for all participants.

Learning outcomes:
- describe the main technologies of additive manufacturing, their capabilities and limitations
- demonstrate some skills with respect to design for additive manufacturing
- demonstrate some skills regarding product design by additive manufacturing
- describe methods for post-AM processing
- demonstrate skills regarding process selection and understanding of product design,
List all mandatory literature, including descriptions of how to access the texts (e.g. Cremona, Chalmers Library, links).
Also list reference literature, further reading, and other non-mandatory texts.
Examination form
Additive manufacturing, exam 4 hp
Additive manufacturing, project 1 hp
Approved course means both approved exam and approved project.
Exam will be organized on-line, maximum score 50 points.
Grading limits: 40% grade 3, 60% grade 4, 80% grade 5.
Approval of project includes report and presentation by the project group, performance of group can qualify for up 5 bonus points on top of exam result.
